I have devoted a good part of my professional life to understanding the nature of loss and grief, and caring for people who are bereaved. I have also come to terms with my own personal losses.
Experiences and lessons from these two areas, the professional and the personal, have contributed to my thinking about the emotional and physical impact of loss. I view myself as a
companion as you journey through loss, grief, and healing. Grief is often an unwelcome stranger who may visit you at the most unexpected and worse times. One moment you are fine simply going through your day, and in the next moment a tsunami of grief washes over you, taking your very breath away.
Our work together will focus on trying to make sense of the senseless, looking for meaning to continue through a life that will always contain elements of grief and sadness. During the early days of grief, you may seek answers to questions about the loss:“How could this happen? Why did this happen to me? What could I have done to prevent it?” Grief does not go away but you can get better at managing it. I will help you discover coping strategies to regulate the myriad emotions related to grief and loss to include sadness, anger, confusion, anxiety, bewilderment, shock, and disappointment, to name a few.
Over the past 40 years I have worked with adolescents, adults, and couples struggling to understand death due to suicide, prolonged illness, sudden death, substance misuse, and murder. I hold the narratives of those who lost a spouse or partner, parent, child, grandparent, sibling, cousin, aunt/uncle, friend, coworker, and for therapists, a client.
